    Adam Strong
    8 Feb 2010 | 9:05 am
Now that the Super Bowl game’s “Brand Bowl” is finished, the polls and opinions are popping up everywhere. This year there seems to be a lot more  reactions and buzz bubbling on the internet, more so than in year’s past, thanks in part to social media sites. Who had the cleverest ads? Who was the funniest?  Facebook, Youtube and Twitter (and maybe even a few old-school water coolers) will be buzzing the rest of today with chatter about both an amazing game and some good and some not so good ads.  Youtube’s voting is still going on and you can catch all the ads…

Disappointing Results, Despite $370,000 Sale Even though the interest in the Silent Domain Auction after the Targeted TRAFFIC conference by Rick Latona could not generate much interest, it appears it produced at least one noteworthy sale, with LongIsland.com selling for $370,000 USD. The Superbowl Shuffle I remember when I was a kid the Bears won the Superbowl and everyone was crazy for the Chicago Bears. So much was the love for “da Bears” across the country that they made a record that immortalized the team and made household names of Mike Ditka and William “Refrigerator” Perry. This record was called “The Superbowl Shuffle“. According to Wikipedia, “The idea for “The Super Bowl Shuffle” came from record producer Randy Weigand, who was a friend of Willie Gault’s. They had met through Randy’s girlfriend,…

It’s been a few years since I was forced to pretend to care about awards shows and sporting events that I’d otherwise had no interest in. When you’re trying to program content for a general audience, not only do you have to be superficially aware of who won what in the Grammys, Emmys, Oscars, Golden Globes, People’s Choice Awards, CMAs, MTVs, etc., but you also have to be awake and publishing when it happens. (Protip: In headline-land, people rarely get nominated for awards — they get “nods” — it’s much shorter and gives you more room to…

I thought this would be an interesting question to see what you might be interested in learning more about. There are numerous resources and tools available that make domaining more accessible to those just getting started and experienced domainers alike. I am almost positive that “Selling domains to end-users” is the obvious answer to this poll question. End user sales is the most profitable and difficult task a domainer faces. So, I have excluded that response to get a more realistic view of interests. Here are your options… Building a Domain Portfolio Website In a…

Brand yourself with customized URL shortener. It has always bothered me that URL shorteners are taking over the web. As many people have pointed out, your entire linking history is subject to the lifeline of a third party service. And with many URL shorteners operating on questionable country code domain names, the risks are prevalent. This weekend I set out to get my own URL shortener. After all, I plunked down five figures for my short domain name DNW.com, so I may as well get as much value out of it as I can. I came across Your Own URL Shortener (YOURLS), and it does the trick. • Importance of Due Diligence When Buying a Domain Name

    8 Feb 2010 | 3:49 pm
When you have secured a deal to purchase a domain name, especially one that has significant value, you need to do your due diligence. The most important research you need to do is to ensure the domain name is owned by the party that you think owns it, and the second is to make sure traffic/PR/directory listings and all other promises can be met. In my opinion, ensuring a domain name is owned by the person/company you believe owns it is the most important thing. Having a Domaintools account allows me to search the Whois history for a domain name. If you are ever unsure of whether a domain name…

Over time, people have grown accustomed to most Web site addresses ending in .com, .edu or .gov. Yet a proposed expansion of the generic top-level domain (gTLD) space by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will change the way we look at domain names forever. In the months ahead, the domain-name landscape will undergo a revolutionary change by allowing a virtually unlimited number of gTLDs—the string of characters after the dot in every Web address. Rather than being limited to .com, .net, .org or other commonly recognized TLDs, any .ourbrand top-level domain…

How many great domains are there for your niche industry?Frank Schilling, a domain investor maverick, has a way with words in his assessment on the scarcity of meaningful, descriptive domain names that rarely hit the market in the many different verticals in business. The cream of the crop names are long gone Schilling says, and he elaborates by saying "Even if you back-up and cast as wide a net as possible,…

Here I am once again sitting in the Qantas Club at LAX waiting for Qantas Flight QF94 to head back home to Melbourne. The last five days have been an absolute blur of meetings, presentations and of course, like any good domain conference, a chronic lack of sleep. At the moment I feel like I’m running on adrenalin and even a shower didn’t manage to wake up the flagging grey matter sitting atop my shoulders. So was it all worth it? You bet it was! I’m so glad that I attended the event and had a chance to catch up with so many friends, make new business contacts and more importantly get…
  • Arrived at DomainFest

    25 Jan 2010 | 10:25 am
Just over a week ago I decided to head across the Pacific and attend DomainFest. The first problem I discovered was my passport was about to expire so after a mad dash to fill in the paper work, pay the “rush” fee it turned up in the mail a couple of days later. What’s even more amazing is that it was a government department that managed to pull this quick turn-around! As many of you know I normally attend all the various conference, work my way through the jetlag only to return home and experience it all over again. The reason why I was debating about attending DomainFest is that after…
  • Domains as an Asset Class

    21 Jan 2010 | 5:55 am
A lot has been written about domains and how you can buy, sell, develop them or even treat them as stock items. I plan on taking a different approach and dealing with domains as an unique asset class that is investable by the professional investment community just like any other class of asset such as stocks, land etc. If domains can be legitimised as an asset class then it's much more likely that external funds will begin to flow into the industry. This potentially means that rather than receiving 2 year multiples we start getting 10-15 years for our assets. Presently, other than…

It's summer holidays here in Australia and I naturally found my kids (aged 16, 14 and 11) glued to the television, WII or playing computer games. Don't get me wrong, I love playing games or watching a good movie but day after day was getting a bit much......it was then that I had an idea. It struck me that school is a great basis for education but it really doesn't teach kids how to do something that is actually really important in life.....how to make money. This is not surprising as any teachers that really know how to do this won't be teaching that long. They'll be making a quick career…

    admin
    1 Feb 2010 | 11:43 am
A great - and still growing - divergence appeared in 2009 between public statements by leaders and their public performance. The politicized, romanticized theater of increasingly populist “democratic” leaders and media seemed to be of a different planet from activities taking place in the real world.   While a large part of the global population appears still transfixed by words, there is a growing perception that great fissures already rend the global strategic architecture.   This is a trend which will compound during 2010.   There is a widespread belief that the…

The transformation, in reality, has been underway since the end of the Cold War, and will continue and compound for at least another decade. The balance of power is changing. Apart from the wave of globalization, which was really a precursor event, what is now emerging is the first truly fundamental change since the end of the Cold War, and, in global terms, it is a change which may redefine entire…

i mean "the gift of giving" in a little different sense. usually its used to mean that its a gift of giving something to someone, right? i am thinking of it in terms of giving my kids the gift of learning to give. its on my mind a lot lately, during this season.i'd love to hear how other people instill this gift in their children...i'm sure we all want to have giving children...i'm sure we all

Another domain which was developed but would probably see no more than a couple hundred in auction is ReliableRemodeler.com According to Quinstreet’s SEC filing “In February 2008, we acquired ReliableRemodeler.com, Inc., or ReliableRemodeler, an Oregon-based company specializing in online home renovation and contractor referrals for $17.5 million in cash and $8.0 million in non-interest-bearing, unsecured promissory notes, in an effort to increase our presence within our home services vertical. • Michael Castello – Thank You !!

    Alan
    4 Jan 2010 | 12:24 pm
What I love about this business is most domain investors never grew up wanting to be in the domaining industry. Most of us fell in to domains by one way or another but never from a childhood dream of owning a domain name. Fact is anyone around for 10 years + probably never had a computer growing up with the exception of a VIC 28, commodore 64 or those radio shack wanna be TANDY computers so the end game was always another plan (and still is to many). The side stories of our industry are probably more exicting than our day to day work and almost everyone has a side story outside of domaining…

The million dollar home page was the original money maker and one that has tried to be repeated many times over (with no such luck) however with the advances in social media since the early days more and more people are selling their souls for the right price I have to give this guy lots of credit though – iwearyourshirt.com From his site the system works like this “In this up and down economy I’m outsourcing my wardrobe (namely shirts) to corporate…

  • Bargain Domains My First Submission and Review

    TeenDomainer
    5 Feb 2010 | 7:27 am
Everyone has seen the banners that adorn Domaining.com or other domaining related websites. BargainDomains.com is a great resource for the community and I think it is a really great idea. Domain Names listed on the site are featured in a newsletter email, then featured on domaining.com and then added to the bargain domains website for 30 days.  There is no listing fees and if the name sells it is only a 12% fee. It also shows the percent off from the estimated value which gives the buyer an idea about the value of the name. Overall I think it an amazing deal for the sellers because of the…

    TeenDomainer
    3 Feb 2010 | 9:37 am
I wanted to share a simple outline that I follow when contacting end users. It is by no means set in stone and will vary depending on the name and the end user you are contacting. First Contact- Send an eMail early in the week I like to send them on Monday so they have the whole week to look at them. If they respond take it from there; if not move to step 2. Second Contact-  Wait 1-2 weeks after 1st contact try a simple contact via phone or email depending on the value of the sale to you simplely to ask if they got your email, have any questions or are interested in buying the domain. Third…
  • More Than One Possible End User Try an eBay Auction

    TeenDomainer
    2 Feb 2010 | 7:15 am
eBay has just made news with some fee changes to the auction structure and that got me thinking about doing a domain auction ebay. When I was first starting in domaining I sold some of my domain names on Ebayand other things on eBay but after I learned more about domain names I stopped selling Domain Names for Sale on Ebay. I have a few small domains that I would like to get mid $xxx to low $xxxx for and I have a list of a group of potential buyers and end users for each. I am going to use eBay as the auction house for a few reasons. 1. eBay is very well known and respected. Many endusers…
  • Can You be Just a Domainer?

    TeenDomainer
    31 Jan 2010 | 12:19 pm
Most of us call ourselves domainers, but really many of us could give ourselves many titles. I think that is one of the best things about the domain industry and working online it enables one to learn and peruse a vast area of work. Domainers today can not really just be domainers, especially when starting out I found that I needed to be a jack of all trades because I did not want to have to pay someone to do simple little tasks for myself every single time I needed it done. Because I took just a little bit of time to teach myself easy little tasks like editing wordpress themes, or building…
  • 5 Places You May Not Think to Look for End Users

    TeenDomainer
    13 Jan 2010 | 12:40 pm
Lately I have been looking at a few out of the box ways to find and contact end users. I have tried the normal emails, calls, and even good old fashion snail mail with stamps. But I was thinking about some new places to look for end users many that involve new social media and other new developments. 1. Twitter - Twitter I think can be a great place to find end user contacts and also contact end users via their twitter accounts. I have sold one domain via twitter and I think their is great possibility to use twitter to sell domains. When you have a keyword domain see if anyone has the twitter…

  • Real Time Search And The Google Superbowl Commercial

    bruce
    8 Feb 2010 | 2:55 pm
During the Superbowl I did a couple blog posts with the second one being firmly planted in my mind as a good test for what real time search can do for traffic and why paying attention to real time SEO for certain events can help drive visitors. Being in the field we are in I was interested to see if Google would do a search commercial or something around the Nexus One, I was actually pleasantly surprised to see it was a commercial based on search, actually all the different things search can do for someone using all the capabilities Google has. Most people are not aware of the way they can…
  • Webfusion Has A Great dotME Domain Deal Going On Now

A few days back I was contacted by Webfusion.com about doing a quick interview for use on their blog. At first I thought that was an odd place to have an interview posted then I heard why. For the month of February they are running a special on dotME domains, $5.88 for each .ME, that is a great deal. If you have been holding off grabbing a few the time would be right at that price. Obviously I am a fan and I will be taking advantage of that pricing. I have met Bradley Epstein from Webfusion in the past and I can vouch for him being a great guy to deal with. If you want to read the interview…
  • Google Superbowl Commercial Simple But Perfect

    7 Feb 2010 | 6:44 pm
I am sure many tech minded folks are talking about how unimpressive the Google superbowl commercial was. And to those of us using search to its fullest everyday it may seem very unimpressive. Many people are already talking about how it should of been for the Nexus One, or some other whiz bang new application Google may have. Well, in a world where most people are still getting their hands around some of the most basic features Google has this was a great way to showcase the various functionality you can get right from your search bar, flight times, local search, etc. By telling a story one…
  • Flo.TV Uses dotTV During Superbowl Commercial

As someone who loves to see great uses and promotion of "alternative" domain extensions I thought, great job, to the Flo.tv team. Their mobile TV device looks pretty nifty and obviously they spent some bucks on their superbowl commerical. It was great to see a promotion with .TV as the domain extension used. dotTV is perfect for a company like that and shows that with the proper application using something alternative can work quite well. On a side note, Flotv.com is the same company, different site. Yep, they chose the .TV to show in the commercial not the .COM. As a gadget lover I will be…

Just a quick post to remind everyone to check their junk or spam folder in whatever email tool they use. I am a big Microsoft Outlook user and sometimes the spam filter can be a bit aggressive and if I do not remember to go back and check the folder ever so often it can get a bit out of hand and it makes it impossible to find anything that may of been filed as spam that was actually something important. As an example in the past week I had 2 advertising deals that actually went to my spam folder, both will now be advertisers on this blog and I would of missed those if I would not of check the…

  • Domain Name Appraisal

    admin
    5 Feb 2010 | 7:20 pm
One of may ways to appraise a domain name I’d like to take a brief moment before I begin to make an admission. I’m an addict – I’m addicted to buying and selling domain names. I wake up in the morning and think about domain names I could buy; I eat lunch while scanning expiring domains; and after a full day you’ll find me on my couch buying domain names. It’s a serious addiction… but one I happily live with. If you’re addicted to domains like I am then you probably own too many to count – some will be great and others you’ll ask yourself what you were thinking. There will…

By Rebecca Prescott Expired domain names may generally be overlooked or go unnoticed, at least by the average person who wants to register a domain. But there’s a whole market of people who buy and sell expired domain names, and software has been created to assist searching through the many that expire every day. You can even sign up for services that email you alerts when a batch of new expired domains is coming through. I wouldn’t recommend this unless you were really serious however, as your inbox can get full very quickly. Though not all expired domains are beneficial, many of…
